Scent of life -- Poetry 2011

One less box:

Halloween costumes,

dance recital outfits,

baby rattles, watches,

miscellaneous history –

an accessible time capsule

saved from her children’s lives.

Touching toys caught residual energy;

ignited a longing to hold her babies…

she imagined scent of new life.

Each item produced images of them

growing and outgrowing belongings …

she loaded these treasures into bags.

Dragged from address to address,

she had keep the past close.

Even though her memories fail,

physical ones clutter her present.
