Cool Summer -- Poetry 2011
Excited for fall, and layers…
hoodies, hats, gloves – not!
Half the summer was spent in fleece,
long pants and heavy socks;
August ends and summer appears,
even the crickets are confused.
Barely a meteor streaked in the sky…
probably avoiding the chill rising
from the Pacific Northwest landscape.
Farmer market crowds revel in sun’s
display scooping up vegetables
and fruits for freezing or canning.
Snatches of conversation lament
the poor growing season barely
sustaining lettuce while still bolting
spinach and no tomatoes on the vine.
Refraining from complaint about being
too hot, they surreptitiously jump back
into their air conditioned cars…
